Project Overview
Uganda faces growing challenges related to energy access, waste management, and environmental degradation. To address these issues, Orii Energy initiated a Biogas Research Project aimed at exploring the potential of biogas as a sustainable, clean energy source for households, farms, institutions, and businesses. This research focuses on developing efficient biogas technologies, assessing feasibility, and promoting largescale adoption to reduce reliance on firewood, charcoal, and fossil fuels.
Project Objectives
- Evaluate the feasibility of biogas as an alternative energy source in Uganda.
- Develop and test efficient biogas digesters suitable for local conditions.

Research Methodology
The project involves field studies, pilot installations, and datadriven analysis to understand the effectiveness of biogas solutions in different settings. The key areas of research include:
- Biogas Feasibility & Potential: Assessing the availability of organic waste (e.g., agricultural residues, animal manure, food waste) for biogas production.
- Technology Testing & Innovation: Designing and testing various biogas digester models to determine efficiency, affordability, and durability.
- Economic & Social Impact Assessment: Evaluating how biogas adoption can reduce energy costs, improve livelihoods, and create jobs.
- Environmental Impact Study: Measuring the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation from biogas use.
- Policy & Market Analysis: Examining barriers and opportunities for biogas expansion in Uganda’s energy sector.
