Energy Saving Research Project – Enhancing Energy Efficiency in Uganda

 Project Overview

Uganda faces increasing energy demand, high electricity costs, and overreliance on inefficient and unsustainable energy sources. To tackle these challenges, Orii Energy launched a research project on energy saving technologies and strategies, aimed at identifying affordable, practical, and scalable energy efficient solutions for households, businesses, and institutions.

This project seeks to reduce energy waste, lower costs, and promote sustainable energy use, ultimately contributing to climate resilience, economic growth, and environmental protection.

 Project Objectives

  • Assess energy consumption patterns and inefficiencies in Uganda.
  • Develop and test energy saving technologies for households, businesses, and public institutions.
  • Promote behavioral change and best practices for energy conservation.
  • Encourage policy recommendations and incentives for energy efficiency adoption.
  • Enhance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions through optimized energy use.

 Research Methodology

The project involves data collection, field studies, and pilot programs to identify effective energy saving solutions. Key focus areas include:

  • Energy Audits & Efficiency Assessments: Conducting field research in homes, schools, and businesses to analyze energy consumption and identify wasteful practices.
  • Efficient Lighting & Appliances: Evaluating the impact of LED lighting, solar powered systems, and energy efficient appliances on electricity savings.
  • Improved Cooking & Heating Solutions: Testing the performance of clean cookstoves, biogas systems, and solar water heaters in reducing energy waste.
  • Building Energy Efficiency: Researching the benefits of insulation, natural cooling systems, and smart energy management technologies.
  • Community Awareness & Training: Educating individuals and businesses on energy saving techniques and behavioral changes.
  • Policy & Economic Impact Analysis: Assessing how energy efficiency measures can lower energy costs and support Uganda’s renewable energy goals.

 Key Findings & Achievements

  • Up to 40% reduction in energy consumption in pilot households using energy efficient solutions.
  • Transition to LED lighting significantly lowered electricity costs in schools and businesses.
  • Energy efficient cookstoves reduced firewood consumption by 50%, benefiting rural households.
  • Green building designs helped improve energy efficiency in urban housing developments.
  • Lower carbon emissions and deforestation due to optimized energy use.
  • Policy recommendations submitted to government agencies for nationwide energy efficiency programs.

 Next Steps & Future Impact

  • Based on research findings, Orii Energy is committed to:
  • Expanding the adoption of energy saving technologies across Uganda.
  • Launching largescale public awareness campaigns to encourage energy conservation.
  • Enhancing innovation in smart energy solutions for homes and businesses.
  • Partnering with policymakers, businesses, and NGOs to implement national energy efficiency programs.
  • Developing financial incentives and subsidies to make energy saving solutions more affordable.
